There's a saying about peony cultivation:"Plant peonies in spring,and they'll never bloom."This is the first pitfall many beginners fall into.
Autumn planting is key:Peony root systems experience a growth peak in autumn.Planting at this time allows the roots a whole autumn and winter to adapt to the soil.
Avoid disturbing roots in spring:If you buy bare-root seedlings or divide plants in spring,the damaged root system cannot supply the large amount of water transpired,often resulting in a"false survival"phenomenon where the peony slowly withers after a few blooms.
II.Sunlight and Ventilation:Give it a"comfortable"space
Peonies are not indoor plants;they prefer cool,dry,and sunny environments.
Light Requirements:Peonies need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily,but they also dislike the intense summer sun.If potted,provide appropriate shade at midday in summer,otherwise the leaf edges are prone to scorching.
Ventilation and Disease Prevention:Peonies are most afraid of"stuffy heat."If kept on a poorly ventilated balcony,it is highly susceptible to leaf spot and root rot.It must be placed in a well-ventilated area.
III.Watering:Control Your Intentions,It Has"Fleshy Roots"
Many flower enthusiasts tend to overwater,but peonies have fleshy roots,tolerating drought but susceptible to waterlogging.
Key Points:Water only when the soil is dry.Excessive moisture will cause the roots to suffocate,leading to rapid root rot.
Precautions:Ground-planted peonies are largely dependent on rainfall;supplement with water appropriately during dry seasons.For potted peonies,ensure the drainage holes in the pot are clear and avoid waterlogging.
IV.Nutrient Supplementation:The"Power Source"for Large Blooms
Prepare high-purity potassium dihydrogen phosphate.
Application Method:Foliar Spray:From early spring after budding to the budding stage,dilute with water at a ratio of 1:1000(approximately one level spoonful to one bottle of mineral water)and spray the leaves every 10 days.
Root irrigation:Before and after the peony blooms,dilute the fertilizer in the same ratio and water the roots.
Precautions:Stop fertilizing after the peony blooms,otherwise it will accelerate flower wilting.After the flowers have faded,apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer again to accumulate energy for flower bud differentiation in the following year.
